Depending on the date booked you will have some free time in EITHER Porthmadog or Caernarfon before joining us on this fantastic rail journey.

It would be hard to find any spot in Wales that is more truly Welsh than the Royal Town of Caernarfon. Located on the scenic Menai Straits in Gwynedd, North Wales, over looking the Straits and the Isle of Anglesey.

A harbour town situated on the Glaslyn Estuary, Porthmadog is rich in maritime history and is an excellent base for touring the surrounding area. It has a number craft shops and restaurants. The town was named after W.A. Maddocks whose ambitious "Cob" embankment scheme led to the town's name, which translates as "Madog's Port". In times gone by, it was a vital, busy shipping port for the international slate trade, brought down from Blaenau Ffestiniog. The maritime history depicts its proud past.

Welsh Highland Railway is Snowdonia's newest railway. The trains - hauled by the world's most powerful narrow gauge steam locomotives - climb from sea level to over 650ft on the foothills of Snowdon, before zig-zagging dramatically down the steep hillside to reach Beddgelert, nestling in the heart of the National Park, then through the magnificent Aberglaslyn Pass and on to Porthmadog. The journey lasts approximately 2.5 hours.
